What Is Psychodynamic Counselling?
Psychodynamic counselling is a form of talking therapy that focuses on understanding how past experiences, particularly early relationships, can influence how we think, feel, and relate to others in the present.
Rather than concentrating solely on specific symptoms or behaviours, psychodynamic counselling is interested in patterns that may repeat across different areas of life — such as in relationships, work, or how we experience ourselves emotionally. These patterns often develop for good reasons, helping us cope at earlier points in our lives, but they can become restrictive or painful over time.
A central part of psychodynamic work is creating space to explore thoughts and feelings that may not always be fully conscious. This can include feelings that are difficult to name, contradictory emotions, or reactions that feel confusing or disproportionate. By bringing these experiences into awareness within a supportive therapeutic relationship, it becomes possible to make sense of them and relate to them differently.
